چکیده

alum sludge is the main residual by-product from drinking-water-treatment processes including coagulation, flocculation, clarification and filtration, followed by dewatering in plants using aluminium salt as a coagulant. It is the most widely generated water-treatment residual worldwide – and is mostly sent to landfill being perceived as a waste of little known reuse value. In Ireland, an annual total of 18 000 t dry solids of alum sludge is generated from the largest water-treatment plant alone, with landfill disposal costs of about £2·6 million. In the uk, about 182 000 t dry solids of waterworks sludge is generated each year, with disposal to landfill as the predominant disposal route. however, due to increasing environmental awareness, escalating costs, dwindling landfill space and the need for sustainability, efforts have been geared towards either minimising the generation of the sludge or finding alternative reuse options. the latter appears to be more feasible, with several studies being conducted to develop alternative end-uses.

Two strategies for phosphorus removal from reject water of municipal wastewater treatment plant using alum sludge.

In view of the well recognized need of reject water treatment in MWWTP (municipal wastewater treatment plant), this paper outlines two strategies for P removal from reject water using alum sludge, which is produced as by-product in drinking water treatment plant when aluminium sulphate is used for flocculating raw waters. One strategy is the use of the alum sludge in liquid form for co-conditio...

Performance evaluation and prediction for a pilot two-stage on-site constructed wetland system employing dewatered alum sludge as main substrate.

Dewatered alum sludge, a widely generated by-product of drinking water treatment plants using aluminium salts as coagulants was used as main substrate in a pilot on-site constructed wetland system treating agricultural wastewater for 11 months. Treatment performance was evaluated and spreadsheet analysis was used to establish correlations between water quality variables. Results showed that rem...

Extending the use of dewatered alum sludge as a P-trapping material in effluent purification: Study on two separate water treatment sludges.

The generation of alum sludge from drinking water purification process remains inevitable when aluminium sulphate is used as primary coagulant for raw water coagulation. Sustainable managing such the sludge becomes an increasing concern in water industry. Its beneficial reuse is therefore highly desirable and has attracted considerable research efforts. In view of the novel development of alum ...

Assessment of aluminum bioavailability in alum sludge for agricultural utilization

Inorganic aluminum ions, [Al(H2O)6]3+, [Al(OH)(H2O)5]2+, and [Al(OH)2(H2O)4]+, are toxic to a number of crops. The aim of this study was to estimate the danger of soil contamination of bioavailable aluminum and heavy metals forms because of alum sludge which was a by-product of water, and wastewater treatment technology using aluminum coagulant is introduced into the soil. Aluminum and selected...

بررسی تصفیه فاضلاب صنایع شوینده به کمک فرایند انعقاد در مقیاس آزمایشگاهی

Introduction: Surfactant or surface active agents are slightly soluble in water and cause foaming in waste treatment plants and also in the surface waters into which the waste effluent is discharged. During aeration of wastewater, these compounds collect on the surface of the water bubbles and create some problems in waste treatment. Methods: In this study, surfactant, turbidity and COD in the...
